A semi-recurring thread amongst my friends is them trying to convince me to move somewhere. So I'm providing the information you would need to actually get me to move to your city.
More info as I think of it.
Unless you have some magic way of having money deposited into my bank account, you will need to find me a job. I tend to do computer stuff (although I'm not attached to that if the job is interesting enough). I also prefer to work in higher education --- universities, basically. These jobs tend to have decent benefits and offer a lot of side benefits, basically, stuff for me to do. As an example, at ISU, I'm involved in a peace group, Amnesty International, the radio station, a free unix group and a bagpipe band, all through the university. I also have access to a decent library. I also fit well in an academic environment.
Having a city with ready access to those things may make it so that I don't need to work at a university.
If I do computer stuff, it should be system administration in a Unix environment. Bonuses for a good Unix environment (kerberos, afs, free unix, etc).
I have a lot of stuff. A lot. Not all of that stuff needs to be where I actually live (see Infrastructure down below). My actual living space only really needs to include room for a bed, a couple of book cases and a computer. A bathroom and cooking space would really be nice as well. I would prefer that this living space be near some sort of public transportation, and in a nice neighborhood where the basic ammenties are available within walking/biking distance (basic ammenities include a good coffee shop, some sort of food place, and a decent if small grocery store).
Some place to practice my bagpipes is also nice. It doesn't have to be where I live, though.
The city I live in should have decent public transportation. It should have interesting things to do: museums, good libraries, good movie theatres, good music venues. The more progressive the city, the more likely I will like it. Other things that are necessary: a good book store, a good music store, a good comic store, some access to computer and electronic junk.
I don't just have stuff, I have an infrastructure. My current network setup includes 16 static IPs from an ISP that really doesn't care what I do with them, as long as I'm not bothering others. Having something like this is a must. I don't really care if the block of IPs is from a box that I tunnel to (in fact, I think as long as latency issues aren't a problem I'd prefer this). Wherever my computers are will need a decent amount of space (a good bedroom size) with good power and cooling. If it is not in my living space, I need to be able to get to this space at any time, although having a moderate drive is okay.
I also provide services for other users and groups. Finding some way of migrating these services is a must.
Inertia is the largest guiding factor of my life. Sometimes I get enough gumption to think about looking around for places to move, but never do anything with it. You must accomodate this.
